What are some of the most common barriers that women, especially women of color, face in the tech industry?

I think when we have the conversation on the barriers that challenge women of color in the tech industry we often talk about bias in recruiting, lack of sponsorship and mentorship once they’re in a job, not having diverse and inclusive environments, but I think it’s a larger conversation that goes in even deeper talking about economic, social, and cultural barriers. There are some women that don’t have the support within their own communities…there are women that may not have access to educational institutions, they may not have the money to attend certain programs. So, it’s important when we have this discussion that we talk about the entire picture of the pipeline to get a really accurate example of these barriers.

What advice do you have for women who are getting started in the technology industry?

I think it’s incredibly important to build a network because it will get tough, and you’ll need to rely on that network to get through those tough times and provide that support as you move through situations.

What type of misconceptions about working in tech do you often hear?

The biggest misconception is that a tech career is mostly software engineering or coding…but there is so much diversity and varied positions within the tech industry. Depending on your interest and depending on your passions, you can pursue anything you’d like. It isn’t just I have to code in a corner for 80 hours a week. We need to broaden our story about what a tech career could look like and where you would fit in.

What would you say to a woman considering a career in tech?

My advice is that if you have the interest and the spark I would fully encourage you to investigate that and see it through. We need many more women, and many more women of color, in tech to address the issues that will be coming up in the technology industry. I’d say, “Bet on yourself and pursue a career in tech.”

Communication

Careers in tech require constant communication with different internal teams as well as your manager. It’s critical that you’re able to convey technical concepts in a way that is clear for both technical and non-technical audiences.

Time Management

Chances are you’ll be working on more than one project or initiative at a time. Time management is essential to delivering projects on deadline while balancing the rest of your workload.

Customer Focus

Customer experience should drive your decision making – what does the customer need, what is expected, how does my product fill that role? Keep in mind that internal stakeholders and colleagues are customers, too.

Networking

Meet-ups, industry conferences, and other live and virtual events are great places to expand your personal and professional network. And, when in-person events aren’t practical, virtual networking tools like LinkedIn are a valuable alternative to meeting other colleagues in the tech industry.
