Chapter 3: Manufacturing Processes

The selection of a manufacturing process directly relates to the needs of the user, the resources of the producer, and the time available to bring the product to market. The level of sophistication in mass production has increased dramatically, relative to the cost, so that many more processes may be realistically considered. In the field of industrial design, plastics have become the primary medium, with metals being a close second.

The importance of understanding the forming, finishing, and assembly of these materials is critical. In addition, designers are now more likely to utilize processes related to ceramic, glass, and soft-goods manufacturing, so understanding a variety of processes is important. In addition, compression in development schedules makes the knowledge of rapid prototyping essential. This chapter provides an overview of some of the manufacturing processes along with important terminology.

Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM)

Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is a process by which metal tooling is “cut” using electrical discharge. The EDM tool, which is shaped in the form of the desired part, is charged and “pressed” into the blank metal surface. The process slowly removes material in the exact negative of the desired shape. Electrical discharge wire cutting is a variation of the EDM process where a moving charged wire cuts into the metal surface (pictured here).
