Ten-year-old Lucy Connors loves black and white movies, colorful clothing, and big words. While intelligent for her age, Lucy’s lack of social skills keeps her from bonding with her classmates. Lucy spends most of her time with her younger sister, Moe. Using a small door hidden in her closet that connects their bedrooms, Lucy and Moe sneak away each night to go on adventures in their imagined worlds.

As Lucy’s family struggles through issues that she doesn’t understand, she clings to her fantasies for escape. But when her parents question Lucy’s grasp on reality, she is forced to let go of her dreamland and confront secrets she has been hiding from herself.
